The waterways of the Mekong Delta are a world apart from the rest of Vietnam. Rivers, streams, and canals dominate the region, with many locals living and working on the water full-time. Away from the water you’ll find one of the greenest areas anywhere in the world, and a growing region par excellence. Rice fields abound, and much of Vietnam’s finest tropical fruit is also grown in the region. In amongst this rural idyll you’ll also discover cities, towns, and villages, all with their own unique flavor, specialisms, and culture.

The risk of malaria is very low in the Mekong Delta. However, we would recommend all travelers to bring with them a personal supply of mosquito repellant and to apply liberally even if you’re normally immune to bites. Dengue fever is a much greater risk for visitors to Vietnam than malaria, and this is also spread via mosquito bites.

There are few, if any, totally-wild crocodiles left in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, though it’s certainly not impossible for a reptilian visitor to arrive. Both Siamese and saltwater crocodiles were once abundant in the region, but nowadays, most Vietnamese crocodiles live in semi-captivity.

However, given the number of waterways to be found in the Mekong, there are often a few crocodiles who arrive by mistake each year, or perhaps on vacation! Should you be lucky enough to spot one on your Mekong Delta private tour, be sure to let your tour guide know, or risk being on the menu yourself.

The Mekong Delta is special for a number of regions. It’s a vital growing region for the whole of the country, producing vast amounts of rice over its thrice-yearly harvests, alongside vegetables and fruits. Some even call it the ‘rice bowl of Vietnam’!
