Vung Tau Battlefield Tour: Horseshoe Hill, Long Phuoc Tunnels, Long Tan Cross

Step back into a pivotal chapter of Vietnam’s history on this immersive half-day tour from Vung Tau or nearby Ba Ria and Ho Tram. Walk the grounds where Australian forces once battled in the dense rubber plantations and learn firsthand the stories behind the military sites that still echo with the past.

This half-day battlefield tour offers a deep dive into one of the most tense and decisive moments in the Vietnam War, focusing on Australian military operations in the region.

Your journey begins in Nui Dat, once known as Hoa Long Village, the base established by the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) in early 1966. Here you will explore the remnants of military life with visits to extensive bunkers, the Kangaroo Pad helicopter landing zone, SAS Hill, Luscombe Airfield, and the battalion flagpole site. This area represents the strategic hub from which Australian forces planned and executed their operations during the war.

Next, you will visit the Nui Dat Kindergarten. Opened in 2002, this school was built by Australian veterans as a lasting gesture of peace and goodwill to support the local community, symbolizing hope and reconciliation after years of conflict. Although the building is now closed, it marks an important stopping place on our battlefield tour.

Cannon at Long Phuoc tunnel site

Your pilgrimage continues to the Long Tan Cross Memorial in Long Tan Village. This poignant site commemorates the 18 brave Australian soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966. The memorial cross, maintained by Australian veterans, stands as a powerful tribute to their sacrifice amidst the quiet rubber plantation where fierce combat once raged.

From there, delve into the Horseshoe Fire Support Base, an essential artillery location that provided cover and strategic advantage to troops stationed at Nui Dat. The site offers stunning views and a chance to appreciate the challenging terrain and military tactics employed during the conflict.

If time permits, the tour will also include exploration of the Long Phuoc Tunnel complex, a remarkable feat of engineering constructed by Viet Cong forces. This tunnel network served as a living and fighting space underground, illustrating the resilience and guerrilla tactics that defined much of the conflict in the region. Walking through these tunnels offers visitors a rare, immersive perspective on the hardships endured by those fighting below ground.
